A portable tank may be made with aome plywood and a large tarp. You don't nescessarily have to draft from a pond or stream.

If you are drafting, you should use full sized hose - the 5 or 6' versions, with the suction screen. Check engine coolant level at every start! Coolant is critical to heads and engine block! look this over carefully, especially if you live in an area where temps can get below 32F. Conversely, this will also allow Fire pump water to dilute the antifreeze solution in the engine cooling system. This allows engine coolant to bleed into the pump, when not pumping, allowing the engine coolant to escape into the fire pump. I have seen several ALF V-12s with the intercooler damaged, and with service valves and checks damaged or in-operative. This would blow out all antifreeze in the cooling system. This cooled the engine, and the excess water/coolant was dumped out the radiater overflow. Fire pump bleed source was allowed to enter the radiater directly. Also controlled by the operater, this was used during extreme pump operations (master streem at full governed throttle) This allowed bleed water from the fire pump to directly cool the engine. This allows pump water to circulate within the intercooler during pump operations, to assist the engine fan in cooling the radiater. The radiater has an intercooler that is controlled by the truck operater. 1) isolated system - the engine is cooled by the coolant and fan only. The ALF 700 has 3 modes of engine cooling. It should have no trace of engine coolant! Check engine radiater for coolant. INSPECT the water when you drain the pump. Timing and distributer function is critical for the V-12.Įnjoy playing with your new truck! Note - if the pump has not been used in a while, fill with water and let sid for a few days, to allow the leather seals to absorb water and seal effectively. NO CARBON CORE! Carbon core wire has too much resistance and will cause cross firing in the distributer cap - VERY expensive to replace. YOU MUST use WIRE core wire, such as Packard 440. It can take up to 10 hours to do it right, and even more if ign wires need to be changed. Engine takes 8 quarts unless you change filter, then it can take up to 10 qts. Change oil at 500 miles, or 1 year, which ever comes first. If you put detergent oil in the engine, you risk running loosened debris thru the bearings! DO NOT use multigrade oils. This engine does not filter oil to the bearings! It merely takes oil pump bypass pressure and dumps it thru the oil filter and back to the pan. Some hints: Use SAE 30 NON detergent oil, unless the engine has been boiled out and rebuilt. The ladder truck, a long frame version that held up to 8 ladders including a 60 footer (3 tier) with 'tormenter poles), and a full hydraulic ladder (100"). The cities service short bed pumper, - meant for tight corners and small streets. The ALF 700 was commonly called a 'Cities Service truck', for that reason - it was mainly used in cities and towns. Don't try to run the truck at highway speeds, it was not meant to run at 60 MPH, nor for long term extended speed trips.

DO NOT exceed 50 MPH for extended periods. To do so will cause engine destruction in short order.

The ALF V-12 should NEVER exceed 4200 RPM. others use a vacuum governor that is internal to the carb.

Several types use a hydraulic governor that uses water from the pump to maintain pressure, and that pressure maintains speed. First, what carbs are on your V-12? ALF used several carbs, and they function differently.
